Points of Pride

  • Union County now has an Educational Foundation that has the potential of raising millions of dollars to support Union County Public Schools. The foundation’s mission is to raise money and provide funding for technological advancements, classroom enhancements and educational programing for UCPS schools, students and teachers system wide. The foundation’s executive director is Dick Baker, who has 25 years experience working in non-profit organization management.

  • Congratulations to Weddington High swimmer, Alex Biehl, for capturing a 2011 NC State 3A Swimming Championship in the 50 Yard Freestyle.

  • Rea View Elementary principal Donna Cook has been chosen by her peers as the Union County Public Schools 2011-12 Principal of the Year.

Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is safe haven for students

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club area director Moses Fox III, at left, plays a game of Air Hockey with students in the club, an after-school program for Union County Public Schools students that is housed at Monroe Middle. The club’s doors opened officially on Jan. 17, 2011, with 24 students signed up to attend. On the third day, however, that number had already doubled. Club organizers held a grand opening Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012.

Young poets from Western Union Elementary are to be published
